(International Organisation for Standardisation) A non-governmental organization of the national standardization institutes of 156 countries, each of which is represented by a member. Its mission is to harmonize the standards on an international level so as to favour mutual exchanges (ISO site).
This standard lays down the requirements for an environmental management system that enables an organization to develop and implement a policy and set targets that take account of the legal specifications and other provisions that the organization signs and information on significant environmental aspects. It is applicable to the environmental aspects that the organization identifies as those that it can keep under control and those on which it may have an influence (UNI EN ISO 14001:2004).
This standard lays down the requirements for a quality management system model for all organizations, irrespective of their type and size and the products supplied. It may be used for internal, contractual and certification purposes (UNI EN ISO 9001:2008).
